Former governor of Abia State and national leader of the All Progressives Congress ( APC), Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu has called on Ndigbo, both home and abroad to unite in order to contribute meaningfully to the growth and development of Nigeria.
Dr. Onu, who spoke in Abuja on Monday night as chairman of the 2015 Igbo Day Celebration, organised by Ohanaeze Ndigbo (FCT chapter), told the gathering that only a united people can collectively make any contribution.
He reminded them of the numerous sacrifices Ndigbo had made in order to keep Nigeria as one indivisible country. Onu predicted that in the nearest future, the Ndigbo would assume their rightful position in the scheme of things in Nigeria.
“I am convinced that the event of this night will rekindle hope in many that when a people come together in search of a common purpose, surely no obstacle can defeat them in the pursuit of a better and brighter future.
“We have a rich history as a people. We have given to our beloved country, men and women of distinction who have made important contributions to national development. We have substantially contributed to the growth of our economy through our resourcefulness and enterprise. We have strengthened our nation’s unity as we live, work and raise a family in virtually every village in all parts of our beloved country.
“In this long and beautiful journey, we should renew faith in ourselves and absolute trust in God. ‘Onye Kwe Chiya Ekwe’. We must resolve to love one another and together affirm that we shall succeed. Self-confidence is the manure that nourishes achievement. I believe that if we resolve to pursue our manifest destiny as one people bound together in strength and purpose, Nigeria’s greatness would be achieved.

“I am confident that Ndi Igbo will help renew Nigeria. We cannot achieve this if we are not united. I urge that we do not allow division among ourselves and hence work together in love and unity in the pursuit of a common destiny. When we work together for the common good, our individual talents, strength and achievements will be better appreciated by all. We did it in the past. We can do it in the future.”
